TPP and the Incongruity Theory

If anyone was ever in doubt about the veracity of the incongruity theory, look no further than Twitch Plays Pokemon. To those uninitiated into the cult of the almighty Helix (praise to him forever), Twitch Plays Pokemon (TPP) is an emulator program of Pokemon red version in which anyone can enter any one of the eight basic commands: up, down, right, left, a, b, start, and select. With thousands of people inputting commands, the result is nothing short of beautiful chaos. Watching the avatar stumble around, compulsively check his Pokedex, and call upon the great Bird Jesus to win his battles is so funny because it is impossible to know what's coming next, so whatever happens is unexpected.

  1. I spent days on TPP and was there for their first elite four encounter, which they almost won somehow. But then it took them over a day to beat them, so I guess they just got lucky. Regardless, the chaos that ensues during anarchy mode is frustrating, yet hilarious to say the least, and the eternal gameplay experienced in democracy mode is one of the most painful experiences of my life to date. Nonetheless, it is evident that TPP contains much comic potential, as well as the potential to have a full-fledged story based off of the pokemon loved by TPP players from around the world.
